In a move aimed at curbing the growing menace of counterfeit medicines, the government is considering bringing vaccines, antimicrobials, narcotic and psychotropic drugs, along with select cancer medications, under Schedule H2 of the Drug Rules. If implemented, this would mandate the use of bar codes or quick response (QR) codes on their packaging.
The proposed regulation would require pharmaceutical companies to print or affix these codes on the labels of listed drugs, enabling better tracking of their distribution and ensuring authenticity throughout the supply chain. The initiative marks a significant step toward safeguarding public health and enhancing the traceability of high-risk and life-saving medications.
