Parameshwara Urges Accountability from Officers on SIR Duty

Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara has called on officials engaged in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls to discharge their duties with responsibility and impartiality, amid growing attention on the ongoing exercise.

Addressing concerns surrounding the revision process, Parameshwara emphasised that officers assigned to SIR-related work must adhere strictly to guidelines and maintain professionalism in their conduct. He noted that the credibility of the electoral process depends significantly on the manner in which field-level officials carry out enumeration and verification tasks.

Focus on Responsible Conduct

The minister underscored that officials must avoid any actions that could raise questions about neutrality or procedural integrity. Given the scale of the exercise, which involves extensive door-to-door verification, he stressed the importance of sensitivity while interacting with the public.

Parameshwara’s remarks come at a time when the SIR process has drawn scrutiny from various quarters, particularly regarding implementation at the ground level. The government, he indicated, expects officers to remain accountable and ensure that the revision is conducted transparently.

Ensuring Electoral Integrity

The Special Intensive Revision is a critical exercise undertaken to update and verify electoral rolls, ensuring accuracy in voter data ahead of future elections. The process typically involves large-scale mobilisation of officials, including booth-level officers and enumerators.

Highlighting the significance of the exercise, the minister reiterated that any lapses or irregularities could undermine public confidence in the electoral system. He therefore urged officials to act in accordance with established norms and uphold the integrity of the process.
