It is a specialty defined by precision, where the difference between a good outcome and a great one often comes down to millimetres, timing, and judgment. Over the last two decades, the field has been transformed by robotics, advanced imaging, and biologic therapies, yet the surgeons who stand out are rarely the ones chasing every new gadget. Born in Malayattoor, Kerala, to Mr. Jose Antony Chitten and Mrs. Philomina Jose, he was raised in a close-knit family alongside his brother, Mr. Jomy Jose, and his sister, Mrs. Jophy Jose. It’s a philosophy that still anchors his practice today – thorough assessment, individualized treatment plans, and a commitment to continuous learning, whether he’s managing an emergency trauma case or planning an elective joint replacement. Equally central to his approach is teamwork, he believes that the best outcomes are rarely the product of one surgeon working alone, but of coordinated, multidisciplinary care.
Practising Where It’s Needed Most
Not every orthopaedic surgeon chooses to build a career in a region like Idukki, where access to specialist care has historically lagged behind India’s metro centres. Dr. Chitten has watched that landscape shift firsthand. “Earlier, patients were often presented with neglected trauma and advanced degenerative conditions due to limited awareness and poor access to healthcare,” he explains. Telemedicine and internet-driven awareness have since narrowed that gap, encouraging earlier diagnosis and timely intervention, but the underlying challenges of delayed referrals, financial constraints, and limited rehabilitation infrastructure haven’t disappeared.
His response has been to meet patients where they are, quite literally. For those travelling long distances for care, he streamlines follow-up schedules and optimizes rehabilitation plans so that every consultation counts, minimizing unnecessary hospital visits without ever compromising the standard of care.
Beyond the Scalpel
A firm believer in lifelong learning, he continually updates his knowledge and surgical expertise by undertaking advanced fellowships and specialized training in arthroscopy and arthroplasty at renowned centres in Switzerland, Australia, and the United Kingdom. His commitment to continuous professional development enables him to adopt contemporary surgical techniques and global best practices, ensuring that his patients benefit from the most advanced orthopaedic care available.
In his own clinic, the range of cases Dr. Chitten sees says a lot about modern life itself. His patients range from young athletes with sports injuries, including rotator cuff tears, labral tears, and ACL and meniscal injuries, to older adults dealing with osteoarthritis and fragility fractures, not to mention high-energy trauma cases in between. Lifestyle, he notes, is rarely a bystander in any of it. “Obesity, physical inactivity, poor conditioning, smoking, diabetes, and vitamin D deficiency significantly contribute to musculoskeletal disorders and can impair healing,” he says.
It’s why his practice rarely begins and ends with a scalpel, a philosophy that shapes his approach to decision-making itself. Before considering surgery, he evaluates each patient’s diagnosis, functional needs, comorbidities, activity level, and expectations. Non-surgical routes such as physiotherapy, medication, lifestyle change, injections are always the first line where appropriate. Surgery enters the conversation only when there’s a clear indication.
Even then, the decision isn’t his alone to make. “I strongly believe in shared decision-making. Patients should be active participants in choosing their treatment,” he says, stressing that patients need a realistic understanding of recovery time and possible complications before they commit to a plan.
Alongside his busy surgical practice, Professor Dr Jojin Jose actively pursues research, scientific writing, and continuing medical education. He has authored numerous scientific publications and serves as a peer reviewer for several internationally reputed orthopaedic journals, contributing to the advancement of evidence-based orthopaedic practice. In recognition of his academic excellence, he was awarded the Gold Medal for his scientific paper on knee arthroscopy and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair in the year of 2022.

When asked what he’d tell the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons, Dr. Chitten’s advice is direct – “Master the fundamentals, embrace technology, and never lose sight of the patient.” Innovations like robotics, AI, navigation, and biologics are welcome tools, he says, but they remain aids, never substitutes, for sound judgment and compassion. Excellence in orthopaedics, in his words, “is a journey, not a destination.”
