In the diverse and densely populated landscape of India, the pressing need for affordable and high-quality healthcare persists. The complexities arising from the intersection of heightened healthcare demands and economic disparities can pose obstacles to individuals seeking prompt and reliable medical assistance. Therefore, the importance of hospitals that prioritize cost-effectiveness without compromising on excellence cannot be emphasized enough.
Amidst the pursuit of healthcare accessible to all and satisfactory for everyone, a beacon of hope emerges in the form of GNRC Hospitals. More than just a medical institution, it symbolizes a commitment to the well-being of entire communities. Founded by Dr. Nomal Chandra Borah, GNRC is a testament to the belief that healthcare should encompass compassion and affordability. Driven by a vision to enhance the medical care landscape in Northeast India, GNRC stands as a testament to the idea that healthcare can and should embody both empathy and cost-effectiveness.
GNRC Limited: Pioneering Excellence in Healthcare Across Northeast India
Established in 1987 in Guwahati, Assam, GNRC Limited, previously known as Guwahati Neurological Research Centre Private Limited, is a prominent healthcare entity that manages a network of multi-specialty hospitals in Assam and West Bengal. Renowned as one of the premier super specialty hospitals in Northeast India, GNRC was founded by Dr. N. C. Borah, a distinguished Neurologist in India, with valuable support from Prof. K. V. Mathai. Prof. Mathai, the first formally trained Neurosurgeon of India and former head of the Department of Neurology at CMC, Vellore, played a pivotal role in the establishment of the organization.
Under the visionary leadership of Dr. Borah, GNRC has been at the forefront of transforming private healthcare in Northeast India by pioneering the introduction of advanced medical technologies such as CT Scan and MRI. The hospital has significantly contributed to the healthcare landscape in the region by incorporating tertiary care segments like Neurosurgery and Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS).
GNRC operates five tertiary care super-specialty hospitals, with four situated in Guwahati, Assam, and one located in Barasat near Kolkata, West Bengal. These hospitals offer a comprehensive range of services encompassing Neurology, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, Cardiology, Critical Care, Tertiary Care, and Accident & Emergency services.
With a total of 720 operational beds, GNRC boasts 610 beds spread across its four hospitals in Guwahati and an additional 110 operational beds in the Barasat facility. Notably, GNRC holds the distinction of having the highest number of ICU beds and ventilators, with 278 ICU beds and 57 ventilators distributed across its four hospitals in Guwahati.
Swasthyamitra Project: Bridging Gaps in Preventive Healthcare
At the heart of GNRC’s commitment to community well-being is the Swasthyamitra Project. This innovative initiative recognizes the significance of local support in promoting preventive healthcare within communities. The Swasthyamitra Project places a local health companion, a Swasthyamitra, in every two to three villages. These individuals, natives of the area, undergo specialized training to raise awareness within the community about preventive and promotive health measures.
GNRC Swasthyamitra comprises a dedicated group of community health workers, predominantly women selected from their communities. Operating in rural and semi-urban areas of Assam, these Swasthya Mitras tirelessly work to provide access to quality and affordable healthcare. Numbering over 5000 across Assam and West Bengal, these professionally trained individuals have positively impacted the lives of more than 10 million people.
Swasthyamitras actively engage in health education, mentoring community members on preventive health measures in personal, family, and community contexts. Regular visits to rural households involve guidance on practices such as proper handwashing, water purification, food hygiene, and awareness about issues like alcohol and tobacco. Additionally, they emphasize the importance of precautionary care for lifestyle diseases like high blood pressure and diabetes.
GNRC’s Swasthya Mitra initiative is a proactive approach, reaching out to the needy population, especially those living below the poverty line, before emergencies occur. These health ambassadors have proven to be essential in addressing the healthcare needs of the community. The Affordable Health Mission, with the support of the USAID-backed SAMRIDH Health initiative, has elevated GNRC’s efforts to make quality healthcare accessible and affordable to the people of Assam.
Collaborating with SAMRIDH, the GNRC Swasthya Mitra Program ensures beneficiaries have access to a significant percentage of hospital beds when needed. The program focuses on raising awareness among rural populations about the importance of COVID-19 preventive measures, including mask usage, social distancing, and hand hygiene. Swasthya Mitras are trained to identify potential COVID-19 cases and collaborate with local health authorities for testing, tracking, isolation, and treatment, contributing to the overall health and well-being of the communities they serve.
GNRC’s Innovative Healthcare Model Earns Global Acclaim
Quartz, a digital native media outlet, lauded GNRC’s groundbreaking approach, noting, “You can make a state-of-the-art hospital out of bamboo.” This pioneering healthcare model not only attracted attention from Quartz but also secured recognition from the World Bank Group (WBG) through its India Development Marketplace (IDM) initiative. GNRC received a grant of US$150,000 to support the expansion of its operating model, with awards presented by Mr. Jitesh Khosla, Chief Secretary, Government of Assam, and Mr. Onno Ruhl, Country Director, India, World Bank.
The global impact of GNRC’s innovative approach was further highlighted when Microsoft founder and philanthropist Bill Gates retweeted the report, stating, “Great approach. A simple business plan is helping healthcare reach more of India’s poor.” This endorsement from Bill Gates underscores the significance of GNRC’s efforts in making healthcare more accessible to underserved populations in India.
