In India, urological health is a silent struggle for many—often whispered about, rarely addressed openly. From frequent urination and kidney stones to more serious conditions like prostate disorders or urological cancers, these issues affect millions, yet remain tucked away behind discomfort and social stigma. Many people brush off symptoms, thinking they’re just part of growing older or nothing serious, only to seek help when things take a turn for the worse. But the truth is, these problems can take a real toll—not just physically, but emotionally and socially too.

That’s where experts like Dr. Pradeep Rao come in—not just treating conditions, but changing how we talk about them. With decades of experience and a patient-first approach, Dr. Pradeep Rao has not only pioneered advanced urological procedures in India but has also worked tirelessly to raise awareness and reduce the hesitation around seeking care.

Honouring a legacy of clinical excellence and compassionate care, Dr. Pradeep Rao has earned his place among India’s Top 10 Prominent Urologists 2025. A true pioneer in the field, he was the first urologist in the world to perform single port surgery in 2007 and has played a key role in introducing advanced technologies such as BackStop and the Stonebreaker. His visionary contributions have redefined urological treatment standards and continue to leave a lasting impact across the nation.

Choosing Urology and Championing Technology

Dr. Pradeep Rao didn’t always envision a career in urology. Like many young doctors, he began his medical journey in general surgery. But a chance to work closely with a senior urologist opened his eyes to a different kind of practice—one that blended technical precision with thoughtful problem-solving.

The field’s focused nature and evolving use of technology resonated with him. His choice to pivot was also rooted in a quiet legacy: his father, a general surgeon, had trained in urology decades earlier, subtly influencing the path his son would one day follow.

What drew Dr. Pradeep Rao further into the field was urology’s deep and evolving relationship with technology. From being among the first to adopt endoscopy and laparoscopy to later embracing robotic surgery, the specialty has consistently led innovation in surgical practice. Dr. Rao’s own proficiency in robotic procedures eventually guided him toward robotic kidney transplantation—a field where accuracy and control are crucial.

His prior experiences along with the backing of a committed nephrology team made the transition to robotic transplants a natural and impactful progression.

Group Dynamics and Specialization

Practicing in a fast-paced city like Mumbai requires not just skill, but structure. Dr. Pradeep Rao is part of a six-member urology group, where each specialist focuses on a different subspecialty – from uro-oncology to reconstructive surgery. This collaborative model enhances both precision in treatment and continuity of care. “We cover for each other,” he says. Showcasing his unwavering care towards his patients and colleagues, he adds,  “Our patients are never left unattended, and we’re not constantly on call-it’s a healthier way to practice.”

The benefits extend beyond clinical care. The team’s dynamic includes DNB trainees whose curiosity and fresh perspectives drive constant learning. Their questions and enthusiasm help senior doctors stay sharp. Regular participation in academic conferences and workshops is encouraged, keeping the group in sync with global advancements. Complex cases are often discussed among colleagues or shared with national and international peers, creating a culture where expertise is pooled rather than siloed.

Driving Innovation

At the heart of Dr. Pradeep Rao’s practice is a commitment to innovation that puts patient outcomes first. One of his most significant contributions has been pioneering laparoscopic donor nephrectomy in Mumbai—a game-changing move at a time when minimally invasive surgery for kidney donors was still rare in the country. By introducing this safer, quicker recovery method, he helped set a new benchmark for donor care and recovery, reshaping how kidney transplants are approached in the region. His dedication to advancing surgical techniques has not only elevated standards of care across the field but has also earned him global recognition. Dr. Pradeep Rao has been invited as faculty to demonstrate and teach cutting-edge surgical techniques in numerous countries across all continents. He also serves as a Visiting Professor at Southern Medical University in Guangzhou, China, holds the esteemed title of Professor Emeritus of Urology at Dr. DY Patil University, and is a member of the editorial boards of the World Journal of Urology and the Journal of Endourology.

Looking Ahead

In light of the growing burden of urological cancers, we asked Dr. Pradeep Rao about his plans for the future. He acknowledged the growing challenge but remained focused and optimistic. “We’re not just preparing to treat more patients—we’re working to stop these cancers before they start,” he explained. His team is actively scaling up their clinical capabilities to manage the growing demand, but he believes that expanding treatment alone is not enough. Emphasizing the importance of prevention, he advocates for increased public education and early screening, particularly for cancers related to lifestyle factors such as smoking and alcohol use.

Beyond the White Coat

Alongside his professional responsibilities, Dr. Pradeep Rao places great value on personal balance. He enjoys exploring new cuisines and documents his culinary experiences through a food blog. Music, travel, and sports are part of his routine, offering ways to recharge both physically and mentally. His ability to maintain this balance is made possible through the support structure of a collaborative group practice, which allows flexibility without compromising patient care. For him, success extends beyond the operating room—it lies in fostering a sustainable work environment where healthcare providers can thrive just as much as the patients they serve.
