Building a Surgeon, Step by Step
Dr. Rajan Sethuratnam’s academic journey is firmly rooted in the University of Madras, where he completed his MBBS in 1979, followed by MS in General Surgery in 1985, and later specialised with an MCh in Cardiothoracic Surgery in 1987 .
From his early years, his engagement extended beyond textbooks. He represented his college in cricket at the All India Intermedical level, served on the college council, and actively participated in medical relief camps. His clinical training spans some of India’s most prestigious institutions, including Madras Medical College and Stanley Medical College, complemented by overseas training stints at St. Vincent’s Hospital, USA (1990), John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford (1995) and Birmingham Children’s Hospital, UK (1996) .
A Career Anchored in Clinical Leadership
Dr. Rajan’s professional career has been deeply intertwined with the Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, The Madras Medical Mission (MMM), where he has been associated since its inception in 1987 .
He currently serves as Chairman & Head of the Division of Cardiac Surgery since June 2024, after having held successive leadership roles including Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Head of Department, and Senior Consultant positions.
Transforming Heart Care
Dr. Rajan’s clinical expertise spans the full spectrum of adult and paediatric cardiac care. Under cardiology and interventional domains, he has performed procedures including coronary and peripheral angiography, complex angioplasties and stenting, structural heart interventions, and AICD implantation, heart failure management and cardiac resynchronisation therapies.
In cardiothoracic surgery, his experience includes off-pump and on-pump CABG, minimally invasive cardiac surgeries, valve repairs and replacements, aortic aneurysm repairs, Ross procedures, redo surgeries, neonatal arterial switches, congenital defect corrections, adult and paediatric heart and lung transplants, and complex congenital reconstructions including Fontan procedures and HLHS repairs .
Dr. Rajan has personally performed over 22,000 cardiac surgeries, encompassing congenital, valvular, aortic root surgeries, CABG, aneurysm repairs, heart transplants, minimally invasive procedures and cardiac tumour resections. He also established India’s first private-sector cryo-preserved homograft heart valve bank, marking a major advancement in cardiac surgical infrastructure.
Publishing the Future of Cardiac Care
Dr. Rajan’s academic footprint is as formidable as his clinical one. He has authored 37 international publications and 40 national publications, covering subjects ranging from congenital heart surgery and valve innovations to cardiac transplantation and minimally invasive techniques.
In addition, he has presented over 30 papers at national and international conferences and actively contributed to global cardiovascular discourse. He has also conducted numerous national and international workshops, including live surgical demonstrations, CME programmes, paediatric cardiac surgery updates and coronary intervention training programmes.
A Mission Rooted in Humanity
Beyond hospital walls, Dr. Rajan’s service philosophy finds its most profound expression in philanthropy. He has led over 55 free cardiac screening camps in rural Tamil Nadu and East Africa, screening more than 22,000 patients, and enabling surgical care for over 1,500 underprivileged rural patients .
As a Founder Trustee of the National Heart Foundation (est. 2005), he has facilitated cardiac treatment for over 2,260 financially weaker patients, amounting to support worth ₹3.5 crore, delivered through partnerships with Madras Medical Mission, Lions Club, Rotary Club and international collaborators.
