From Global Excellence to Local Impact
In modern medicine, few fields have advanced as rapidly as spine surgery. From once being perceived as highly risky and uncertain, it has evolved into a sophisticated specialty that combines surgical expertise, robotics, artificial intelligence, and regenerative medicine. At the forefront of this transformation in India stands Dr. Sudeep Jain, a name synonymous with innovation, dedication, and excellence in spine care. As the founder of Spine Solutions India (SSI), his journey over the past 25 years is not just about surgeries performed, but about redefining how spinal care is delivered in the country.
The Making of a Spine Specialist
Dr. Jain’s story began during his postgraduate years at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital (RML) and Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC), New Delhi. In a department where spine care was often overlooked due to limited resources and faculty time, he was challenged by his professor to independently handle the spine OPD and operating lists after a crash course of self-study.
Following this, he joined AIIMS, New Delhi, as a senior resident, where he became an integral part of one of the busiest scoliosis and spine units in the country. Working under one of the most respected personalities of scoliosis surgery, he managed a heavy caseload of complex cases from across India, often handling surgical responsibilities that most residents only dream of.
His thirst for knowledge then took him abroad for three prestigious international fellowships in Seoul (South Korea), Izmir (Turkey) and Singapore. These experiences shaped his surgical philosophy, blending Eastern precision, European neurosurgical excellence, and cutting-edge Asian innovations.
Bridging Healthcare Inequity
While clinical excellence is a cornerstone of Dr. Jain’s career, what truly distinguishes him is his pioneering role in bringing minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) to India. Nearly 15 years ago, when such techniques were almost unheard of in Delhi, he was already performing them regularly. His association with global medical device leaders made him one of the highest-volume MISS surgeons in India.
But his biggest contribution came under the Make in India initiative. Partnering with PITKAR, one of India’s oldest surgical instrumentation companies, Dr. Jain helped design and develop the country’s first indigenous MISS spine system. With its patented, unique design, this innovation reduced costs drastically and made high-quality implants accessible not just to Indian patients but also to several countries abroad.
Equally remarkable was his initiative to bridge healthcare inequity. While working with Fortis and Max hospitals, Dr. Jain facilitated a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Employees State Insurance (ESI) Corporation, enabling poor factory workers’ children with congenital or juvenile scoliosis to undergo highly complex and expensive corrective surgeries free of cost.
Where Technology Meets Healing
Dr. Jain is also a firm believer in the integration of technology with surgical expertise. At SSI and its associated hospitals, procedures now employ 3D navigation systems, AI-based surgical planning, robotic assistance, O-arm guided intraoperative imaging, and neuronavigation for safety around delicate nerves.
However, as he often emphasizes, technology is only one part of the equation. Complex spine care depends on multidisciplinary teamwork. Thus, all his centres have dedicated units for children with congenital spinal defects as well as elderly patients in their 90s, ensuring safety and mobility for even the most fragile patients.
A New Era of World-Class Spine Care
Looking ahead, Dr. Jain is optimistic about the future of spine surgery in India. With a growing medical infrastructure, global patient inflows, technological integration, and reduced stigma around spinal procedures, he foresees an explosion of high-volume, world-class spine centres across India. For young orthopaedic and neurosurgeons, he believes this is one of the most promising specialties of the future.
Balancing Excellence with Compassion
Beyond the operation theatre, Dr. Jain remains grounded through family time, travel, community involvement, and active participation in NGOs and social causes. Despite a thriving private practice, he continues to perform free spine surgeries under government schemes like Ayushman Bharat and PM-JAY, staying true to his mission of making advanced spine care accessible to all.
