Very rarely does one encounter an individual who carries nothing but humility, integrity, and exceptional skill, and even rarer are those who choose this path and succeed with grace. When a strong upbringing is paired with unwavering self-determination, the journey forward becomes not just visible, but purposeful.
An individual who is instinctively respected, warmly remembered, and deeply valued by everyone he meets leaves behind more than achievements, he leaves an imprint. Such lives inspire not through proclamation, but through quiet consistency, service, and character. One such individual we are honoured to feature is Dr. T. H. Anjanappa.
From Soil to Scalpel
Dr. T. H. Anjanappa, is a 71-year-old surgical gastroenterologist who comes from a deeply rural and economically modest background. He was born in Doddathumkuru village of Doddaballapur taluk as one of seven children to his father Anumantarayappa, a humble farmer. His childhood involved grazing cattle, working in agricultural fields. These early hardships shaped his character and instilled in him a strong belief in discipline, humility, and hard work. From a young age, his sole ambition was to excel academically, a goal he consistently pursued throughout his life. He was profoundly influenced by the philosophy of Basavanna, particularly stating a line very fondly, “Kayakave Kailasa”, which translates to work is worship.
Excellence Earned
Dr. Anjanappa stood first in the Doddaballapur taluk in his SSLC examination in 1970. He continued his education at National College, Basavanagudi, where one of his teachers, H. Narasimha, later became Vice-Chancellor. In 1973, he secured admission to Government Medical College, Ballari, where he completed his MBBS with strong academic performance. Following this, he worked as a resident at CSA Hospital and later pursued his postgraduate studies at KMC Hubli.
A Reputation Built on Care
With over four decades of service, Dr. Anjanappa has held every academic position in a teaching hospital system, progressing from lecturer to assistant professor, associate professor, professor, and Head of Department across multiple medical colleges. His clinical career included service at Victoria Hospital for one year and Bowering and Lady Curzon Hospital for five years. One of the most defining incidents of his career involved performing ten emergency bullet removal surgeries single-handedly in one night on injured patients, all of whom survived. Over the course of his career, he has operated on more than 35,000 patients. He notes with quiet pride that, “There are two professions regarded as the noblest, being a doctor and being a teacher, and I was fortunate to find success in both.”
Excellence Without Borders
In 1994, Dr. Anjanappa attended the World Surgeons Fest in London, where he was recognized with a Best Paper Award and honored for excellence in surgery. His academic contributions extend to his long-standing role as Moderator of the Surgical Society of Bangalore, a position he has held for 28 years. He has also served as Dean and Head of Department in several medical colleges. Currently, he is the Chairman of Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences, an elected Director of the Vokkaligara Sangha, and Chairman of a super-specialty hospital under the same institutional umbrella, along with this, he holds a key position as the Chairman of the Karnataka’s Cancer Society.
Dr. Anjanappa’s career has been marked by several prestigious honors. He received the Rajyotsava Award, Karnataka’s highest civilian honor, in 2019. He is also a recipient of the Dr. B. C. Roy National Award, the highest medical award in India, along with the Kempegowda Award from Bangalore.
A Trusted Voice in Crisis
Beyond his institutional roles, Dr. Anjanappa has been deeply involved in social service. Through his NGO, Chinmaya Seva Sangha, he and his team have conducted more than 1,500 medical camps in rural areas. He is widely known for his public outreach through Kannada-language health talks and videos, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he provided accurate information on immunity, prevention, and coping strategies, helping reduce fear among the public. His communication style, often infused with humor, has made him a popular speaker across schools, colleges, and community organizations leaving a lasting impact on every person he crosses paths with.
Service as a Way of Life
Despite his public stature and numerous accolades, Dr. Anjanappa describes himself as a simple and humble individual. He is deeply service-oriented and often treats patients regardless of their ability to pay, accepting whatever they can afford. While widely recognized and celebrated, he admits to feeling uncomfortable in large bureaucratic offices, a lingering effect of his village upbringing. His early desire to become a teacher was partly driven by a childhood dream of wearing proper clothes, something he lacked growing up. That aspiration continues to reflect in his disciplined personal appearance and dedication to teaching.
Reflecting on his career, he describes himself as an extremely happy doctor whose decades of experience have brought respect, satisfaction, and a lasting connection with patients and students alike.
