Veteran actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, affectionately known as ‘Bharat Kumar‘ for his iconic patriotic films, passed away in Mumbai early Friday morning at the age of 87.
Renowned for classics like Shaheed, Upkar, and Purab Aur Paschim, Kumar left an indelible mark on Indian cinema during the late 1960s and 1970s. He had been battling age-related health issues and succumbed around 3:30 am at Kokilaben Ambani Hospital, according to filmmaker and family friend Ashoke Pandit. He was recently hospitalized due to pneumonia.
Tributes poured in, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembering him as an “icon of Indian cinema.” A recipient of the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Kumar was also celebrated for his performances in Do Badan, Haryali Aur Rasta, and Gumnam.
