Once celebrated as the next big thing in mobile technology, foldable smartphones are now experiencing a sharp decline in popularity. After debuting with much fanfare seven years ago, the category is facing sagging sales—despite several design upgrades and a drop in average selling prices (ASP).
According to market research firm IDC, foldable smartphone shipments in India plummeted by 47% year-on-year in 2024, contributing to less than 0.5% of the total smartphone market. The downturn continued into 2025, with a further 20% dip in shipments during the first quarter.
The data, which reflects shipments from manufacturers to distributors and retailers, signals a growing disinterest in what was once seen as the future of smartphones.
