Novo Nordisk India has secured approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) to expand the use of its weight-loss injection, Wegovy, for treating fatty liver disease in the country.
The regulatory nod clears Wegovy (semaglutide injection 2.4 mg) for adults suffering from noncirrhotic Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH) who have moderate to advanced liver fibrosis. According to the company, this milestone makes Wegovy the first and only GLP-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA) approved both in India and globally for this specific condition.
MASH is a progressive liver disease triggered by an excess accumulation of fat, which leads to chronic inflammation and liver damage. The treatment is approved to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
