With escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, Indian refiners are actively exploring alternative energy sources—including West African nations—to safeguard fuel supplies in case Iran disrupts the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil and gas transit route.
Industry executives revealed that following the outbreak of hostilities on Friday, senior officials from the oil ministry, along with top energy players, have been assessing contingency plans to mitigate the impact of potential supply shocks and price surges.
The urgency stems from India’s heavy dependence on the region: about 40% of its total crude oil imports and 54% of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) transit through the Strait of Hormuz. With global energy security at stake, India is leaving no stone unturned to ensure steady fuel access.
