AI company OpenAI has acquired healthcare technology startup Torch in a deal valued at around $100 million, as it deepens its push into AI-driven healthcare solutions.
Torch specialises in unifying fragmented medical data, such as clinical records, lab reports, prescriptions and wellness information into a single, AI-readable system. The acquisition is expected to strengthen OpenAI’s healthcare offerings, particularly ChatGPT Health, by enabling more coherent and personalised interpretation of user health data. Torch’s team will join OpenAI as part of the transaction.
What it means for users:
For individuals, the move could translate into clearer explanations of medical records, better continuity of health information, and more personalised AI-assisted insights. However, experts caution that such tools are intended to support, not replace medical professionals, underscoring the need for strong data privacy safeguards and regulatory oversight as AI’s role in healthcare expands.
