By a voice vote on Wednesday, the Lok Sabha approved the Railways (Amendment) Bill, 2024. By merging the Railway Board’s composition and constitution into the Railways Act of 1989, the bill aims to repeal the Indian Railway Board Act of 1905.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated during the discussion of the proposed law that it will streamline the legal framework governing Indian Railways’ operations.
Additionally, he addressed certain members’ worries about the Indian Railways’ overcentralization and privatization. Vaishnaw stated that the Indian Railways will not be privatized and that the infrastructure being built was for the sake of the country. He said that this measure had no bearing on the sovereignty of parliament.
