The Railways have started a final location survey for a proposed rail line linking Mathura and Aligarh via Medu junction, on the Mathura–Kasganj section of North Eastern Railway, an official said on Sunday, according to a PTI report.
The new link is meant to improve connectivity between the two neighbouring cities, as there’s currently no direct rail route between them and passengers rely on other modes of transport.
The survey follows a proposal from Mathura MP Hema Malini, who raised the demand in a letter to the General Manager of North Central Railway on September 14. The issue was also discussed at a meeting on Friday between North Central Railway General Manager Naresh Pal Singh and MPs representing the Agra Division.
The Railways have also indicated that Hema Malini’s demand to extend the Agra–Varanasi Vande Bharat Express to Mathura could be considered once the station has adequate maintenance facilities.
