Types of home health care services

Home health care services are often referred to as the professional medical care a patient can receive at home.  Studies show that patients can make faster progress at home than in the hospital by receiving quality care in the comfort of their homes. These services can be essential in various circumstances, including patients with illnesses that improve over time, patients recovering from surgery, patients with diabetes and respiratory conditions, etc. In this blog, we will discuss what home care is, the various types of home healthcare services, and the procedures involved in applying for home healthcare services.

What is home care? Exploring the types of home healthcare services

Home care, otherwise known as domiciliary care or personal care, is where patients can receive treatment at home by avoiding staying at hospitals. This helps the patients receive personalized treatment, allowing them to develop an understanding of their medical requirements and schedules. These services are offered to enhance a patient’s well-being, eventually resulting in a better quality of life.

Doctor’s care

Most patients prefer a doctor’s service where a doctor pays a visit to the patient’s home to treat their illness by providing them with a more comfortable and speedy recovery.

Personal care

This is a type of service that provides assistance in personal hygiene such as bathing, grooming, personal care, and dressing. Personal care can help the well-being of patients by helping them maintain personal hygiene and overall health.

Nurse care

This is one of the most common home health services that a patient can receive at their own comfort. Based on the doctor’s consultations, nurses plan on treating the illness, which could include dressing, checking the blood sugar levels, and providing other health support. Home nurses will assist the patients by taking care of the healing process of the wound or any illness to avoid any further infection. Nursing care can be essential for people suffering from stroke, cancer, dementia, other injuries, etc.

Occupational therapy

This therapy can be given to patients of all ages to enhance their social, physical, and emotional disabilities, leading to an improved quality of life. Here, the therapists evaluate individual needs and engage with the patients, helping them to participate actively in their daily routines. This can benefit patients suffering from autism, behavioural and mental health problems.

Physical therapy

This therapy is provided by a physiotherapist, who helps patients restore or strengthen the muscles and reduce pain in their joints using various techniques, including exercises and massages. This therapy is mainly given to stroke patients, people suffering from muscle pain, patients recovering from surgery, and many more.

Speech therapy

A speech therapist treats patients to improve their communication and speech. This can include pronunciation, chewing of food, etc. This kind of therapy is given to patients suffering from strokes, dementia, etc.

Companion care

Companionship care home care services are where a companion provides assistance or supervision to patients who are home alone or isolated. This service is mainly provided to senior or elderly patients, helping them with their everyday routine.

Home health aide service

This service is given to patients to help them with their basic personal needs, including, bathing, grooming, hygiene, preparing and serving meals. The service providers also make sure to assist the patients in taking their medications as prescribed and help them keep track of their schedule.

Rehabilitation service

This type of treatment is generally provided to patients wanting to regain their basic abilities, such as mental, physical, learning, and thinking abilities. This can minimize their disabilities by showing significant changes in their health conditions, helping them to return to their daily lives and start living like a normal person.

Medical social service

Medical social workers assist patients by providing support and the necessary resources for their medical illness and treatment. They identify the patient’s needs by assessing their situation.

Excluding the services mentioned above, there are several other services that a patient can receive depending on their illness. Understanding the right type of service, can be determined by the patient’s  disease or condition. Once the decision is made, the next step is to apply for the appropriate type of health care service provided by various health care agencies.

How to apply for home health care services?

  1. A patient with an illness or who has undergone surgery must meet the eligibility requirements given by that particular entity.
  2. After registering for home health care, a licensed nurse plans on studying thoroughly about the illness or medications given by the patient.
  3. A member or a representative of that entity may visit the patient’s home to analyse their specific needs and services.
  4. On the basis of the evaluation, the agency creates a plan listing all the services required and assesses what portion of the services provided is covered by insurance and what will need to be paid out of pocket.
  5. As a last step, a contract is signed, and the agency begins by providing service as agreed and monitors the patient’s progress and is free to adjust the plan as needed.
