GNRC HOSPITALS

The long-held belief that complex neurological conditions can only be effectively treated in countries like the USA, UK, or Japan is now outdated. Gone are the days when seeking world-class neurological care meant accumulating a fortune for treatment abroad. The reality today is that India has emerged as a global hub for neurology, with hospitals equipped with cutting-edge neuroimaging technology, robotic neurosurgery, and a team of highly skilled neurologists trained at prestigious international institutions. Excellence in neurology is no longer a privilege limited to a few nations—India now stands at the forefront, offering world-class treatment within its own borders.

Among the leading institutions transforming neurological care in India is GNRC Hospitals, which has been recognized as India’s Best Hospital of the Year 2024. With an unwavering commitment to specialization, GNRC has spent over 37 years pioneering advancements in neurology, neurosurgery, and related disciplines. Today, it operates five hospitals—GNRC Dispur, GNRC Sixmile, GNRC North Guwahati, GNRC Good Health and GNRC Hospitals, Barasat in Kolkata—bringing expert care to diverse regions. Under the leadership of Dr Nomal Chandra Borah, Founder-Affordable Health Mission & GNRC Group of Hospitals continues to push the boundaries of neurological excellence.

Over the decades, the hospital’s expert faculty has successfully managed thousands of cases, from stroke treatment to intricate brain and spine surgeries, ensuring optimal patient outcomes. Its team comprises some of the most distinguished neurologists, neurosurgeons, stroke specialists, and critical care experts—many of whom have been trained at world-renowned institutions. Their expertise guarantees precise diagnoses, timely interventions, and comprehensive treatment plans for neurological disorders.
In an exclusive interview with Dr. Nomal Chandra Borah, the visionary founder of GNRC Hospitals, we delve deeper into the institution’s foundation, mission, and remarkable journey in redefining neurological healthcare in India

What are the key factors that contribute to GNRC Hospitals being recognized for excellence in neurology care?

GNRC Hospitals has been at the forefront of delivering world-class neurological care, setting new benchmarks in diagnosis, treatment, and accessibility. Our team of highly skilled specialists ensures accurate diagnoses, timely interventions, and comprehensive treatment plans for a wide range of neurological disorders.
A standout feature of our neurology department is the Advanced Epilepsy Centre, which offers precise diagnostic assessments and tailored treatment plans, including medication management and surgical interventions for drug-resistant epilepsy. However, our commitment goes beyond treatment—we actively engage in raising awareness about neurological disorders through free health camps, public education programs, and collaborations with community health workers.
Additionally, GNRC has made cutting-edge neurology care affordable and accessible through initiatives like Rs 540/day ICU care and Rs 270/day general ward care, ensuring that patients from all socio-economic backgrounds receive the best possible treatment.

Can you share a recent success story or breakthrough in neurology at GNRC Hospitals?

In December 2024, GNRC Hospitals successfully treated a 32-year-old man from a remote village in Assam who arrived with classic symptoms of a major ischemic stroke—sudden paralysis on one side of his body and slurred speech. His family had traveled nearly six hours to reach our hospital, significantly reducing the critical golden hour for stroke intervention.
Upon arrival, our Stroke Response Team immediately activated the Code Stroke Protocol, ensuring rapid assessment and intervention. Following a successful surgical procedure, our multidisciplinary rehabilitation team designed a personalized recovery plan, enabling the patient to regain mobility and speech over time. And importantly, this entire process was completed within two hours from the arrival of the patient in the emergency room.

What are the long-term goals and vision for GNRC Hospitals as it expands its healthcare services in Assam and beyond?

GNRC Hospitals remains steadfast in its mission: “Health for All, Smiles for All.” As a pioneer in providing affordable, high-quality healthcare in Assam and Northeast India, our long-term vision includes:
● Expanding our reach to underserved regions to ensure that no patient is left behind due to geographical constraints.
● Advancing medical excellence through cutting-edge technologies and continuous training of healthcare professionals.
● Strengthening accessibility by keeping treatment costs affordable so that financial limitations never stand in the way of quality healthcare.

How does GNRC Hospitals ensure a patient-centric approach to treatment?

At GNRC, patient care extends far beyond medical treatment. We prioritize holistic rehabilitation, ensuring that patients receive personalized recovery plans tailored to their needs. Key aspects of our approach include:
● Speech and cognitive therapy for stroke and brain injury patients to regain essential functions.
● Lifestyle modification programs and counseling to help patients effectively manage their neurological conditions.
● Family counseling sessions, recognizing that neurological disorders often impact caregivers as much as the patients themselves.
● Patient education programs to empower individuals with knowledge about their condition and treatment options.
● Psychological support and counseling for those managing chronic neurological disorders, ensuring emotional well-being alongside physical recovery.

Conclusion :

The standardized practices and patient-first approach at GNRC Hospitals have played a pivotal role in its recognition as one of India’s leading neurology hospitals. As GNRC continues to expand, innovate, and set new standards, it remains a beacon of hope, healing, and medical excellence, reinforcing its commitment to making world-class neurology care accessible to all.
