Dr. Priyadarshan Krishnamurthi

Dr. Priyadarshan Krishnamurthi (1)

In reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, time often loses its conventional meaning. Procedures that aim to restore form and function after trauma or disease can extend for hours, demanding sustained precision and focus. At the centre of this work is a clear objective: to ensure that patients leave the operating theatre with outcomes that allow them to return to daily life with minimal disruption.

When the stakes are high, Dr. Priyadarshan Krishnamurthi brings the human touch that is often spoken about in medicine. Every surgery he performs stands as a demonstration of his skill and commitment to his work.

The Reconstruction Lens

For Dr. Priyadarshan Krishnamurthi medicine was rooted in a simple but lasting impression: the ability of doctors to resolve problems that others could not. Observing patient interactions, particularly the visible relief and gratitude expressed after treatment, formed a practical understanding of medicine as a problem-solving discipline.

His formal training began at Bangalore Medical College, where he completed his MBBS in 1984, graduating with distinctions. He went on to pursue an MS in General Surgery from Delhi University, followed by an MCh in Plastic Surgery from Mumbai University. He further strengthened his credentials with a DNB in Plastic Surgery from the National Board, New Delhi. Advanced training included fellowships in Microvascular Surgery in London and Cosmetic Surgery in Florida.

A Specialty Without Boundaries

During his medical training, Dr. Krishnamurthi was exposed to multiple surgical disciplines. While each offered its own clinical depth, plastic surgery presented a distinct combination of technical demand and conceptual flexibility. Unlike more standardised surgical pathways, plastic surgery required adaptation across varied clinical scenarios, often extending beyond the boundaries of a single organ system.

He identifies two defining characteristics of the field. First, its role as a support specialty: plastic surgeons are frequently called upon to address complications or reconstructive needs arising from other surgical interventions. Second, the degree to which outcomes depend on individual surgical judgement and execution.

Handling Complexity in Practice

Since beginning his practice in 1999, Dr. Krishnamurthi has worked across a range of healthcare settings in Bangalore, eventually associating with major corporate hospitals. His work spans trauma reconstruction, oncological reconstruction, and cosmetic procedures, often involving cases that require extended operative time and multidisciplinary coordination.

The nature of his work frequently involves high-stakes scenarios. These include reattachment procedures following traumatic amputations, reconstruction after extensive cancer resections, and restoration of facial structure in accident-related injuries.

Keeping Pace with Progress

Dr. Krishnamurthi emphasises the importance of continuous learning, supported by participation in conferences and international exposure. He notes that surgical practice cannot remain static. Developments in equipment, procedural techniques, and patient expectations necessitate regular adaptation. This requires not only technical updating but also a willingness to reassess established approaches.

Bridging Surgical Gaps

At present, his focus remains on delivering consistent patient care while also functioning as a resource for other surgical teams managing complex cases. Plastic surgery, in this context, operates as an integrative discipline, often bridging gaps in treatment pathways.

Looking ahead, the objective is to align local practice with global standards, ensuring that patients have access to advanced reconstructive options without the need to seek treatment elsewhere.

What It Takes

For all the aspirants eager to join this field, Dr. Krishnamurthi advises that the profession requires sustained commitment, both in terms of time and intellectual engagement. Interest in the chosen specialty is essential, particularly given the long hours and continuous learning involved. He cautions against approaching medicine solely as a financial pursuit, noting that the demands of the field require a deeper level of motivation.
