The Road to Nephrology
Dr. Pavan M’s medical journey began at JJM Medical College, Davanagere, followed by an MD in Internal Medicine at Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, in 2007, before he went on to specialize with a DNB in Nephrology from Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre in 2010.
Following his specialized training, Dr. Pavan transitioned into academic medicine, serving as an Assistant Professor at Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College before joining Adichunchanagiri Institute of Medical Sciences, where he rose to Associate Professor and served until 2024. His scholarly imprint extends globally through his role as a Visiting Professor at Lanzhou University Second Hospital and its Second Clinical Medical College in China.
A prolific researcher, he has authored 35 scientific publications spanning acute kidney injury, chronic renal failure, renal replacement therapies, organ transplantation, glomerular disorders, and systemic complications. Beyond his written contributions, he regularly delivers lectures at international medical symposia across China, Canada, and the United States. Dr. Pavan remains an active Life Member of both the Indian Society of Nephrology and the Indian Society of Organ Transplantation, and has previously lent his expertise as an Editorial Board Member for the Journal of Nephrology Research.
Filling the Gap
Recognizing a critical gap in specialized healthcare across Hassan and neighboring districts, Dr. Pavan identified that regions such as Chikkamagaluru lacked full-time renal care specialists. This stark shortage prompted his decision to return home, dedicating his expertise entirely to serving these underserved populations.
He initially established Swaasthya Kidney Care, a specialized clinic aimed at delivering targeted outpatient renal management. However, as patient needs expanded, Dr. Pavan realized that comprehensive care demanded far more than routine consultations. Treating complex cases required robust infrastructure, spanning inpatient admissions, routine and emergency dialysis, intensive care units, surgical and urological interventions, and integrated multidisciplinary support.
To address these broader systemic challenges, he co-founded Sahyaadri Multispeciality Hospital. The institution was built to decentralize advanced medicine, bringing state-of-the-art diagnostic, surgical, and nephrological treatments directly to the local community.
A Holistic Approach to Kidney Care
Today, as a nephrologist, a major part of his practice involves evaluating and managing patients with kidney diseases, including chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury, hypertension-related kidney disease, dialysis-dependent kidney disease and patients being considered for or undergoing kidney transplantation.
A particularly important part of his practice is counselling patients and their families. Over the last 16 years, he has increasingly understood that managing kidney disease requires much more than prescribing medication. Patients and their attendants need to understand the chronicity of the illness, the available treatment options and the importance of long-term follow-up.
At Sahyaadri Multispeciality Hospital, his role also involves contributing to the development of integrated kidney care, including state-of-the-art dialysis care, ICU and inpatient services, and operation-theatre facilities for nephro-urological procedures, coupled with multidisciplinary support.

Man Behind the Doctor
Over the years, Dr. Pavan has learned that maintaining a healthy balance is important not only for personal well-being but also for being able to give his best to his patients.
One of the things he particularly enjoys is playing badminton, which he tries to make part of his daily routine. It helps him stay physically active, refresh his mind and step away from the demands of clinical practice for some time.
He also enjoys travelling, as it gives him an opportunity to explore new places, experiences and perspectives. On a more reflective side, Dr. Pavan has a keen interest in spirituality and Vedic literature, which he finds helps him maintain perspective and remain grounded. He also follows the financial markets, an area he enjoys learning about in his spare time.
Family remains an important part of his life and has been a constant source of support throughout his professional journey. He believes that professional success should not come at the cost of losing the relationships and values that keep a person grounded.
