Ask any vascular surgeon what the hardest cases in their field are, and most will point to the same category, chronic limb-threatening ischemia, where blood flow to a limb has narrowed to the point that amputation becomes the default outcome unless someone is willing to attempt something more difficult. This is the territory Dr. Venkatesh Reddy K has built his career around. As Consultant and Head of the Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Manipal Hospital, Old Airport Road, Bengaluru, he has spent over two decades navigating heavily calcified arteries, chronic total occlusions, and multilevel arterial disease.
That reputation for taking on the harder cases now extends beyond the operating theatre. In 2024, Dr. Reddy was elected President of the Vascular Society of Karnataka (VASKAR), and he serves as academic faculty for the DrNB Vascular Surgery Program, mentoring the next generation of specialists through the same complex procedures he has spent his career mastering. It’s this combination that marks him out among his peers, and why we’re proud to feature him among the country’s top vascular surgeons this year.
Built, Layer by Layer
That instinct for taking on difficult cases didn’t appear overnight, but was built, layer by layer, through a training path that ran through some of Karnataka’s most rigorous medical institutions. Dr. Reddy earned his MBBS from Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Mangalore, one of India’s oldest and most respected medical schools. He went on to complete his MS in General Surgery at Adichunchunagiri Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), Mandya, sharpening the surgical fundamentals that would later support his work in the vascular subspecialty.

It was his subsequent Fellowship in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery (FEVS), pursued at Manipal Hospital under MAHE University, that set the direction his career would ultimately take. Rather than stopping at general surgical competence, Dr. Reddy chose to specialize further into a field that demanded both the steadiness of a surgeon’s hand and the precision of an interventionist’s eye. No wonder eventually he would be known as a highly respected doctor in the medical field and would particularly become popular among his patients as a friendly doctor with an accurate diagnosis.
The Long Way to the Top
His career within the Manipal network began not at the top but at the ground level, as a Specialist in the Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Manipal Hospital, Old Airport Road, the same institution he now leads. That early posting gave him a first close look at the volume and complexity of cases a tertiary vascular unit handles, and it wasn’t long before he moved up to Associate Consultant at the same hospital, taking on greater clinical responsibility.
What followed was a period of expansion rather than a straight climb. Dr. Reddy took on Consultant roles across several units within the Manipal ecosystem, each posting adding a different patient demographic and a different set of clinical challenges to his experience. Rather than settling into one location early, he built a footprint across Bengaluru and beyond, treating vascular disease in both high-volume urban settings and smaller-city practices where specialist access is harder to come by.
That breadth of exposure eventually brought him back to where he started. Dr. Reddy returned to Manipal Hospital, Old Airport Road, this time as Consultant and Head of the Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, a role in which he now oversees not just individual cases but the strategic direction of the department itself.
More Than a Surgeon
As Head of the Department, Dr. Venkatesh’s responsibilities today extend well beyond the operating table. A significant part of his role involves expanding the hospital’s endovascular programs, setting clinical protocols, and building the kind of high-volume referral unit capable of handling the complex pathologies he’d spent two decades learning to treat. This means overseeing everything from quality assurance and patient-safety standards to the acquisition of newer endovascular technologies, ensuring the department keeps pace with a field that evolves as quickly as vascular surgery does.
Much of this work happens away from the patient’s bedside, in the quieter business of clinical governance. It’s the kind of work that rarely makes it into a patient’s account of their treatment, but it shapes the outcome of nearly every case that passes through the department.
Dr. Reddy also carries an academic mandate alongside his clinical one. As a vital contributing faculty of the DrNB Vascular Surgery Program, he mentors residents through structured teaching, operative training, and case discussions, and as an Academic Guide, he supervises their clinical exposure, research work, and dissertations.
Building a Legacy
Outside the walls of Manipal Hospital, Dr. Reddy’s presence is felt across the wider vascular surgery community. His earlier roles as Honorary Secretary of the Surgical Society of Bangalore and Organizing Secretary of the Venous Association of India reflect a pattern that has held true through much of his career, that his interest in the field rarely stayed confined to his own operating list.
That interest has also carried him well beyond Bengaluru. He has been invited faculty at endovascular workshops in Italy, Germany, and France, and was invited by Mount Hospital, Perth, for a specialised endovascular workshop as early as 2010. His published research, including work on SUPERA stent outcomes in Indian patients and case studies on rare vascular conditions, adds to a body of scientific contribution.
All in all, Dr. Venkatesh Reddy K’s journey reflects not just individual achievement, but a steady, decades-long contribution to raising the standard of vascular care in India, a legacy that continues to grow with every case he takes on.
