Alibaba Introduces Qwen 3.5, Marking Major Leap Toward Self-Acting AI Systems

Chinese technology giant Alibaba has unveiled its latest artificial intelligence model, Qwen 3.5, marking a significant step in the global race toward what experts describe as the “agentic AI era”, a phase where AI systems can independently perform complex tasks rather than merely respond to prompts.

The new model was launched on February 16, 2026, and is designed to operate with greater autonomy, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness compared to earlier versions. According to the company, Qwen 3.5 can execute multi-step tasks, make decisions, and interact across mobile and desktop applications with minimal human intervention.

Focus on autonomous AI capabilities

Alibaba said the model introduces “visual agentic capabilities,” enabling it to not only understand instructions but also take action, such as managing workflows or performing tasks across digital platforms. This reflects a broader industry shift from conversational chatbots toward AI agents that can independently carry out real-world activities.

The company claims Qwen 3.5 is significantly more efficient than its predecessor, reportedly being about 60% cheaper to operate while delivering stronger performance on large workloads.

Intensifying global AI competition

The launch comes amid intensifying competition in China’s AI sector, where firms such as ByteDance and emerging AI startups are rapidly developing rival models. Alibaba is aiming to boost adoption of its Qwen chatbot ecosystem as it competes domestically and globally with leading AI systems from the United States and other countries.

Analysts note that the introduction of Qwen 3.5 also reflects China’s broader push to build advanced AI tools that can match or rival Western technologies while remaining more affordable and customizable.

Toward the future of AI

Industry experts say the model represents a strategic shift toward AI systems capable of planning, reasoning, and acting autonomously, capabilities expected to shape future applications in business automation, software development, and digital services.

With the release of Qwen 3.5, Alibaba has signaled its ambition to remain a major global contender in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape.
