Dr. Sanjay Shankar Bhat

Dr. Sanjay Shankar Bhat (1)

Sr. Consultant, Interventional Cardiology - Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, Bangalore

Born in a country known as the world’s diabetes capital, and one that carries a disproportionately high burden of cardiac mortality, a cardiac diagnosis has long meant, for the average Indian family, a brush with life and death. The rise of interventional cardiology has quietly rewritten that equation. These advanced procedures have helped lakhs of patients restore blood flow, improve heart function, and avoid the trauma of open-heart surgery altogether.

But techniques are only as good as the hands that wield them. And when those hands belong to someone like Dr. Sanjay Bhat, the difference isn’t just clinical, it’s personal, for the patient and every family member waiting outside.

Dr. Sanjay Bhat, Senior Consultant, Cardiology at Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, brings 27 years of clinical experience to a field where precision is everything. An MBBS graduate with an MD in General Medicine and a DNB in Cardiology, he is also a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and a member of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI).

Spanning stints across top hospitals of the country, Dr. Bhat has built a practice around complex coronary interventions, structural heart procedures, arrhythmia management, and emergency cardiac care. It’s this combination of longevity, range, and consistently good outcomes in high-stakes procedures that earns him a place among India’s most renowned cardiologists.

Two Continents, One Clinical Vision

Dr. Sanjay Shankar Bhat’s clinical outlook was shaped in no small part by advanced training at globally renowned institutions in South Korea and the United States. According to him, structured decision-making in complex cases is what ultimately separates a good clinician from an exceptional one.

South Korea, a country celebrated worldwide for its pioneering work in intricate coronary interventions, exposed him to an extraordinary standard of precision and discipline, particularly in managing Chronic Total Occlusions (CTO) and complicated bifurcation lesions. The United States, by contrast, immersed him in a culture built on data-driven medicine, large-scale clinical research, and coordinated, multi-specialty “Heart Team” frameworks.

Bringing these two influences together gave rise to his guiding philosophy of pairing elite procedural skill with an unwavering commitment to evidence-based practice.

Technology as a Tool, Not a Template

Asked how he reconciles rapid technological advancement with the need for individualised care, Dr. Bhat is clear that innovation is a tool, never a substitute for clinical judgment. In an age dominated by robotics, artificial intelligence, and automated imaging, he holds firmly to medicine’s oldest rule, where the patient is treated, not the scan.

Whenever a new technology surfaces, he assesses it strictly through the twin filters of clinical value and patient safety. For him, personalization begins with recognizing that a 45-year-old, physically active corporate professional with a single blocked vessel calls for an entirely different approach than an 82-year-old frail individual battling multi-vessel disease alongside kidney impairment. He draws on the latest advancements to fine-tune procedures according to each person’s unique anatomy and physiology, ensuring that technology serves as a means to customized treatment rather than a blanket solution applied to everyone alike.

Practice Without Boundaries

Beyond his clinical work as a Senior Interventional Cardiologist, Dr. Sanjay Shankar Bhat is also the Founder and Director of Mukambika Heart Care, a community-facing practice built to close the gap between advanced hospital-based interventions and accessible, high-quality cardiac care at the local level. His expertise extends to the global stage as well, with active involvement in international medical device and clinical advisory boards, including a position on Medtronic’s Leadless Pacemaker Advisory Board.

On the research front, Dr. Bhat has pushed cardiovascular medicine past conventional boundaries, contributing notably to the growing field of inflammation-targeted therapies, including the evaluation of Colchicine and emerging anti-inflammatory pathways for atheroprotection. He has also brought efficiency to patient care by adopting no-code automation and digital workflows, creating a smoother, error-free experience across scheduling, intake, and prescription management. What ties these pursuits together is his ability to balance rigorous, data-backed intervention with genuine, individualized attention.

Recharge, Reflect, Return

In the life of a high-performing clinician, balance and renewal matter just as much as skill, both being essential to consistently giving one’s best. In this regard, Dr. Bhat points first to the importance of having a personal anchor. For him, that anchor is a strict fitness discipline – an hour of swimming, six days a week, a practice he describes as a form of moving meditation that helps him disconnect, recharge, and build the stamina needed for long stretches in the cath lab. Time with family, along with long-term personal projects and agricultural pursuits away from the city, keeps him equally grounded.

His message to aspiring cardiologists centers on one core idea – never let technical mastery come at the cost of empathy. It’s easy, he notes, to get swept up in the adrenaline of the cath lab and the sophistication of modern equipment, but behind every complex angiogram is a frightened patient placing their trust, and their life, in the doctor’s hands. His advice is to pursue technology and continuous learning relentlessly, hold oneself to the highest global standards of skill, and yet never lose sight of humility, clear communication, and genuine compassion at the bedside.
