Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has unveiled a Rs 61,500 crore highway corridor project designed to connect Siliguri in West Bengal with Guwahati in Assam and Shillong in Meghalaya. According to a TOI report, this proposed 630-km stretch, along with a separate expressway linking Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh to Siliguri, is aimed at strengthening road connectivity between Uttar Pradesh and India’s North East region.
The corridor will involve a mix of fresh highway construction and upgrades to existing road infrastructure. The government anticipates that these projects will help cut down travel distances and journey times, while also enhancing access to the strategically significant area surrounding the Siliguri corridor, often referred to as the “Chicken’s Neck.”
Gadkari made this announcement at an event held on Monday, where he also laid out details of the proposed highway’s various sections along with other road infrastructure initiatives planned for Assam.
